Final Exam Calculator

Enter your mark going into the exam, how much the exam is worth and the final mark you want. You get the exam mark you need, and what every other exam mark would leave you with.

How to use it

  1. Enter your current mark in the course, before the exam.
  2. Enter the exam's weight. In Ontario the final evaluation is usually 30% of the course.
  3. Enter the final mark you want and read the exam mark you need.

How it is worked out

Your final mark is your term mark times its share of the course, plus your exam mark times the exam's share. Rearranged: exam mark needed = (final mark wanted - current mark x (1 - exam weight)) / exam weight.

Example: with 82% going in, an exam worth 30% and a goal of 85%, you need (85 - 82 x 0.7) / 0.3 = 92% on the exam.

Common questions

How much is the final exam worth in Ontario?

Ontario's assessment policy sets the final evaluation at 30% of the course mark, with the other 70% from term work. The 30% can be an exam, a final project or a mix, so check your course outline.

What if the mark I need is over 100%?

Then the final mark you entered is out of reach in this course. Lower the target to see the best you can finish with: the answer is the final mark a perfect exam would give you.

Does the exam mark matter for university admission?

It matters through your final course mark. Ontario universities use final Grade 12 U/M marks in your top six, and conditional offers usually require you to keep your average up to the end.
