Course Code Lookup

Type a course code or a subject. Ontario codes are decoded letter by letter, so you can see the grade, the course type and whether it counts toward your top six. Other provinces are searchable by name.

How to use it

  1. Type a code such as MHF4U, or a subject such as chemistry.
  2. Pick your province and grade to narrow the list.
  3. Check the type: only Grade 12 U and M courses count toward an Ontario top six.

How it is worked out

An Ontario course code has five characters. The first three letters are the subject (MHF is Advanced Functions). The number is the grade: 1 is Grade 9, 2 is Grade 10, 3 is Grade 11 and 4 is Grade 12. The last letter is the course type.

Course types: U is University, M is University/College, C is College, E is Workplace and O is Open. In Grades 9 and 10, D is Academic, P is Applied and W is de-streamed. Only Grade 12 U and M courses count toward a university admission average.

Common questions

What does the 4U in a course code mean?

The 4 means Grade 12 and the U means it is a University preparation course. 4U and 4M courses are the ones Ontario universities use for your top six average.

Is a 4M course as good as a 4U course?

For your admission average, yes: both count. But a program's required courses usually have to be U level, so check the prerequisites for the program you want.

Are course codes the same in every school?

The first five characters are set by the province. Schools often add a sixth character for their own use, such as a section or a specialised program.
